ERC Equipoise Management Team

ERC Equipoise’s team consists of Petroleum Engineering, Geophysics and Geology Professionals with decades of combined oil and gas experience. All have worked in international reservoir evaluation and have extensive contacts within the upstream petroleum industry, particularly the North Sea, Europe, the Middle East, Africa, the Indian Sub-Continent and Canada. They bring a diverse range of experience, including time spent working in supermajors, independent oil companies, consultancies, investment banks and academia. The team therefore has been exposed to the widest possible range of technical and commercial challenges, and are fully aware of all the issues that can arise during the course of the oil and gas development cycle. David Wilson

David Wilson, FIMMM

Managing Director, Dubai

David Wilson is a founder of ERC Equipoise and acts as the Managing Director of our Dubai office. He has over 50 years of experience in the oil and gas industry, and has been involved in all aspects from E&P, to academia, to consulting. He began his career with Mobil and Shell International, working across Canada, Europe and the Arabian Gulf. He has also been a Reader (Associate Professor) with Imperial College, University of London, and a founder of multiple companies including the original ERC Energy Resource Consultants in 1977, Atlantis Holding AS in 1996, and the restart of ERC Energy Resource Consultants in 2003.

David is one of the world’s foremost specialists in reserve evaluation, and was integrally involved in the development of UK reserve reporting standards in the 1980s. As a professional who has worked on assets as an owner at E&P companies, who has evaluated assets as a consultant and taught theoretical and practical aspects of oil and gas recovery as a professor, David has developed technical, oratory and advocacy skills which serve him well during his work as an Expert Witness for client companies. His time as President of Atlantis refined his knowledge of the business aspects of E&P activity, including asset acquisition and divestment analysis and negotiation. David takes a hands-on approach to his work with ERC Equipoise, and brings his experience with practically all reservoir types around the globe to every project the ERC Equipoise is involved with.

David is a Fellow of the Institute of Materials, Metals and Mining. He holds a Master of Science in Petroleum Engineering from the University of Alberta and a Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering from the University of Edinburgh.

Simon McDonald

Simon McDonald, CEng

Engineering Director

Simon McDonald is a founder of ERC Equipoise and acts as Engineering Director. Over the last 37 years, Simon has worked as a Petroleum Engineer and Engineering Manager for Shell International Petroleum and Atlantis, and has worked in consultancy as Managing Director of the original ERC Resource Consultants in the late 1980s and 1990s, as well as the restart of ERC in 2003.

Simon has been exposed to virtually all reservoir types within Europe, Africa and Asia. He is able to draw upon his experience as a manager in both E&P and consulting companies to identify both causes of concern and solutions to unique and demanding challenges. Field experience from international assignments in Europe and the Arabian Gulf while with Shell, and in the UAE, Oman and Tunisia while with Atlantis gives him a practical view of petroleum operations. His experience enables him to bridge the gap between technical and commercial considerations and he has worked extensively for clients as their reporting engineer to banking syndicates, during external financing processes.

Simon is a Chartered Engineer, registered with the UK Energy Institute. He holds a Master of Science in Petroleum Engineering from Imperial College of London, and a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from Leeds University. He is also  an Officer of the European Chapter of the Society of Petroleum Evaluation Engineers.

Adam Law

Adam Law

Dr. Adam Law is a founder of ERC Equipoise and serves as Geoscience Director. Over the last 18 years, he has gained extensive experience both as an operator and as a consultant. Adam worked as a Geoscientist for Amerada Hess and as a Geophysicist for British Gas, prior to joining Equipoise Solutions as a Principal Geoscientist in 2003.

Adam has worked in a variety of basins around the world and has been involved in all aspects of geoscience analysis, from frontier exploration to field rehabilitation. In recent years he has led the geological and geophysical analysis of some of largest discoveries in the world, including the onshore Rajasthan field in India, and the offshore Jubilee field in Ghana. He is well versed in all manners of advanced analytical techniques, and believes in fit-for-purpose models for all of his clients. Adam has been involved in studies ranging from unitisations, to A&D work, through to Competent Person’s Reports, and technical studies for internal purposes.

Adam is a registered Petroleum Evaluator with the Society of Petroleum Evaluation Engineers. He holds a PhD in Geophysics from Cambridge University, and a Bachelor of Science in Exploration Geophysics from London University. He is also an Officer of the Geological Society of London, and has been a member of the Council of the PESGB.

Don Scott

Don Scott, FGS

Geophysics Director

Don Scott is a founder of ERC Equipoise and serves as Geophysics Director. He has over 48 years of experience in the oil and gas industry, and is a recognised Expert in the area of equity disputes. During his career he has worked for a variety of companies including Seismograph Service Ltd., Burmah Oil Exploration Ltd., Exploration London and Othona Exploration Ltd. He Is most known for his role as a Founder, Technical Director and Chairman of Scott Pickford plc starting in 1977, and as a Director of Equipoise Solutions, starting in 1998.

At ERC Equipoise, Don plays an integral role in Tract Participation dispute. His work as an Expert in disputes involving the Audrey, Balmoral, Fulmar, Scott, Blenheim, Teitjerk, Snorre and Nelson fields, amongst others, has given him extensive experience in this area. He also plays an active role in generating Competent Person’s Reports, and providing technical advice and assistance to a variety of our clients.

Don is a Fellow of the Geological Society of London. He holds a Masters of Science in Applied Geophysics from the University of Birmingham, and a Bachelor of Science in Geology from the University of Southampton.

Charles Wood

Charles Wood

Technical Director

Dr. Charles Wood is a founder of ERC Equipoise and acts as Technical Director. Charles has over 26 years of experience in the oil and gas industry. His past work experience has included computer programming, geoscience software development, and developing methodology for quantifying uncertainty in depth conversion and volumetric uncertainty. During his career he has worked for companies such as Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, International Petroleum Consultants Ltd. and Scott Pickford Group Ltd. He was also Technical Director at Equipoise Solutions, starting in 1998.

Charles’ experience as a programmer and software developer allows ERC Equipoise to develop custom solutions, as needed, to client’s projects. It also has allowed him to become familiar with the strengths and limitations of computer aided analysis, which has enabled him to take a lead role in the quantification of uncertainty in velocity modelling and depth conversion. Charles also takes a lead role in the application of new technologies at ERC Equipoise, ensuring we have the latest tools to aid us in projects for our clients.

Charles holds a PhD in Theoretical Chemistry and a Bachelor of Arts in Natural Sciences, both from Cambridge University.

Mark Holliday

Mark Holliday

Managing Director, London

Mark Holliday is a founder of ERC Equipoise, and acts as Managing Director in our London office. Mark has over 20 years experience in the oil and gas industry as a geologist, and is responsible for the general management of ERC Equipoise projects. He also leads our Acquisition and Divestments support team. Over the course of his career he has worked for Halliburton, Nigel Press Associates and Scott Pickford, and also was a Director of Equipoise Solutions Ltd.

Mark’s experience as a field geologist and consultant has given him a broad background in oil and gas activities. He is well versed in software training, mapping, GIS systems and digital databases, prospect ranking and reserves and resources determination. Mark’s experience in project management and his years managing the Equipoise team allows him to identify the correct skill sets required for our client’s projects, to maximize productivity and results.

In his role as Manager of A&D support, Mark leads the team that assists oil and gas companies in preparing for such processes from a technical perspective. This can include Geology and Geophysics reporting and supply of data rooms equipment and expertise and support.

Mark holds a Bachelor of Science in Geology from the University of London and is a member of the PESGB.

Sean McQuaid

Sean McQuaid

Quantitative Geophysics Director

Sean McQuaid has been with ERC Equipoise since its inception, and directs the Quantitative Rock Physics group. Sean has worked with operators and consulting groups since 1985, including time spent with BP, LFP Seismic Ltd., which he founded, Ensign Geophysics Ltd., and Geotrace.

Advanced seismic analysis requires an understanding of rock physics. It impacts on choices around seismic acquisition and reprocessing, and requires difficult decisions to be made about how the seismic experiment should best be interpreted. Sean’s extensive background in this area is important in our advisory work with clients such as Nexen in their Buzzard field, and when generating Competent Person’s Reports and asset evaluations. Sean acts as a project lead for geological and geophysical studies at ERC Equipoise and is involved in a wide range of studies, from exploration block assessment to integrated field studies.

Sean hold a Master’s of Business Administration from City University Business School and a Bachelor of Arts in Physics from Oxford University (Holroyd Scholar). He is a member of the SEG, EAGE and PESGB.

Paul Chernik

Business Development Manager

Paul Chernik has been with ERC Equipoise since its inception, and is responsible for Business Development. He also works as a Senior Petroleum Engineer on our projects. Paul has over 10 years of experience in the oil and gas business in a variety of capacities, from reserve and resource evaluation as an independent auditor, to acquisition and divestment brokering in investment banking, to process design in oil sands refineries.

Paul brings experience in conventional and unconventional reserve and resource analysis gained while working in Canada. His unconventional knowledge includes; ultra-tight gas (<0.001 md) and tight oil formations, heavy oil, and high sulphur content oil and gas. This experience was gained while working at ERC Energy Resource Consultants and prior to that, GLJ Petroleum Consultants in Calgary Canada. Paul also spent time with Tristone Capital and Macquarie Capital in London as an A&D specialist and was responsible for executing mandates across Europe and Africa. His time in the financial community gave him insights into the end-uses of reserve and resource evaluations including; reserve-based lending, mezzanine financing, equity raises, research publications and M&A activities.

Paul is a registered Canadian Professional Engineer with the Association of Professional Engineers, Geologists and Geophysicists of Alberta, and is Certified by the Society of Petroleum Engineers. He holds a Master of Science in Chemical Engineering from the University of Alberta, and a Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering from the University of Calgary. He is also a member of the Association of International Petroleum Negotiators and the Society of Petroleum Evaluation Engineers.

Glyn Pugh

Glyn Pugh

Glyn Pugh has been with ERC Equipoise since its inception, and works as a Principal Geophysicist on our team. Glyn brings extensive experience in the fields of seismic interpretation, velocity modelling, depth conversion and volumetric evaluation. Over the last 18 years, he has worked at Mobil, Badley Ashton and Lasmo. He also worked as a Principal Geophysicist at Equipoise Solutions, beginning in 1999.

Glyn is well respected in industry for his knowledge of velocity modelling, and lectures on depth conversion at Imperial College London. He is well versed in the assessment of structural and reservoir model uncertainty using both multi-deterministic and geo-statistical methods honed through exploration, development, audit and equity support / submission / expert roles. Glyn also works with several operators, representing their geophysical interests at partner group meetings through to the international government level.

Glyn holds a Bachelor of Science in Geology and Applied Geology (Geophysics) from the University of Glasgow (also awarded the Joseph Black Medal). He also gained a Masters Degree in Petroleum Geology from Aberdeen University, and is a member of the PESGB.

Craig Osborne

Dr. Craig Osborne has been with ERC Equipoise since its inception, and works as a Principal Reservoir Modeller on our team, specialising in Petrel. Craig is an experienced Geoscientist with over 15 years in the petroleum industry, and has worked for Scott Pickford and Equipoise Solutions.

Craig has worked on projects across the globe; including ones based out of Africa, Europe, the FSU and Asia and has worked for many clients including the likes of Tullow and RWE. He has developed Petrel models for use in licensing rounds, Equity Expert Projects and reserves and resource analysis for stock market and A&D purposes. Craig’s Petrel experience gives him an understanding of the strengths and pitfalls of computer reservoir modelling, which are important when either developing models for clients, or in auditing third party models.

Craig holds a PhD in Geology from Cardiff University, a Master’s of Science in Petroleum Geophysics from Birmingham University and a Bachelor of Science in Geology from Durham University. He is a member of the PESGB, EAGE and Geological Society of London.

Rhod Phillips

Rhod Phillips

Principal Reservoir Engineer

Rhod Phillips works as a Principal Reservoir Engineer on our team with over 18 years experience. He has worked as an Operations and Reservoir Engineer at both large and small Operating companies, joining ERC Equipoise after time spent with Amerada Hess, Regal Petroleum and Fairfield Energy.

Rhod has worked on the Reservoir Engineering of brown-field and new developments in the North Sea and internationally. The wide range of projects he has been involved with means he is very familiar with taking data from the dataroom evaluation stage, through detailed review, analytical and numerical Reservoir Engineering studies to economic evaluation and a Reserves position. His experience of presenting the analyses and results to technical, commercial and Board level audiences means he has a good understanding of client’s final requirements. Rhod has been deeply involved with the Reserves reporting at all of the companies he has worked at. He also has extensive, worldwide experience in operational roles supervising wireline logging, well test and completions operations giving important insights into the acquisition and QC of the client’s data.

Rhod holds a Bachelor of Engineering in Mechanical Engineering from University College London, a Masters Degree in Petroleum Engineering from Heriot Watt University and is a member of the SPE.

Roman Bobolecki

Roman Bobolecki

Roman Bobolecki works as a Principal Petrophysicist on our team, and has over 30 years experience in the petroleum industry.  He has worked for BP, SPT, Ensign Geophysics/Geotrace and RPS Energy.

Roman has worked on projects from EAME, FSU, Africa, Asia, Australia and North America and has worked for clients including KOC, Salamander, Cairn, PetroCanada and SASOL on volumetric studies, CPR’s and AIM listings.  Roman’s experience of log and core data gives him an understanding of the strengths of these data applied to both petrophysical and rock properties modelling for seismic calibration.

Roman holds a BSc degree in Applied Science and MSc degree in Analysis of Geological Data from Kingston Polytechnic. He is a member of the SPE, SPWLA, and Fellow of the Geological Society of London.

Ian Firth

Ian Firth

Ian Firth has some 29 years of industry experience and joined ERC Equipoise as a Principal Geologist in 2012. Prior to joining ERC Equipoise Ian gained extensive experience of geology and geophysics within an operating company environment, in staff positions with BP & Statoil. During that time he established a proven track record managing operated exploration licences being responsible for 4 commercial oil and gas discoveries totalling 2.0 TCF of gas and ca. 100mmbbls of oil and condensate. In his time with Statoil Ian also developed his skills as a production geoscience team leader with his geoscience teams successfully completing, and gaining the Norwegian authorities approval for, the development plans for 5 fields, containing 9 separate oil and gas accumulations.

Ian then moved into the consultancy industry with GCA where he worked as a lead geoscientist and project leader for a number of multi-disciplinary oil and gas field production and valuation studies for major operators including; Shell, Total, ConocoPhillips and ExxonMobil. During this period Ian also gained a strong commercial understanding of exploration and production projects whilst advising clients and managing projects concerning the valuation and divestment of oil & gas properties. He has an in-depth understanding of the oil industry dispute resolution procedures as a result of leading the G&G teams preparing 4 successful Expert Submissions related to Equity/ Contractual disputes concerning giant oil and gas fields and acting as the Independent Expert for a North Sea equity redetermination. At ERC Equipoise, Ian will be taking responsibility for field/prospect evaluation, and also general geoscience project management.

Ian is a Fellow of the Geological Society of London and is a member of the Society of Petroleum Engineers and the PESGB. Ian holds a Bachelor of Science in Geology from the University of Wales Swansea.

Shane Hattingh

Shane Hattingh

Principal Reservoir Engineer

Dr Shane Hattingh has 26 years' industry and research experience in the earth sciences and reservoir engineering. He began his career as a geophysicist carrying out exploration for South African mining companies, before moving into the oil industry. As a reservoir engineer, he has worked for Soekor, the South African national oil company and Energy Africa, a small independent. He worked for international consultancies for ten years before joining ERC Equipoise in 2012.

Shane's specialist interest is numerical simulation and he has completed many varied and challenging simulation studies, including fractured reservoirs, difficult waterfloods, compositional models and enhanced oil recovery projects. He has a university education in geology and geophysics and a PhD in applied mathematics on the subject of numerical simulation of low permeability naturally fractured gas reservoirs. Shane is very active in reserves estimating and reporting and is a United Kingdom Chartered Scientist and a member of the Society of Petroleum Evaluation Engineers. He has extensive experience in many parts of the world, particularly in West Africa and the Middle East.

Don Munn

Don Munn

Associate Principal Geologist

Dr. Don Munn has a broad industry experience and proven record in the evaluation and development of both oil and gas fields as well as being directly involved in the managerial and commercial aspects of the E&P industry. This experience has been gained over a period of 30 years while working for super-majors, small independent companies and as a petroleum consultant.

He began his career as a production geoscientist with Shell International, being part of integrated teams involved in the redevelopment of several giant Middle Eastern fields. Don later served as Deputy Head and Senior Geologist in the development of integrated reservoir models for Shell’s equity-based group in the North Sea. After leaving Shell, he served as a Director of the original ERC Energy Resource Consultants, Vice-President of Atlantis Holding Norway and Executive Vice-President of Candax Energy. In these roles Don gained extensive experience in the evaluation of oil and gas assets and directed appraisal and development programs. He was also heavily involved in the management of operated and non-operated assets.

Don hold a PhD in Geology from Open University, and a Bachelor of Science in Geology from the University of Birmingham.
